PorcFest is a Free State of Mind – or An Ode to Alternative Currencies

Published July 3, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

This is one of the most difficult posts I’ve ever had to write.  Not because it’s emotional, but because I hate to think about the fact that I am no longer on vacation.  I know that sounds like such a first-world problem, but to be fair, my vacation was PorcFest 2012.

Sunset at PorcFest 2012 – Photo be Nikki Darling

Despite the name, PorcFest 2012 was not about bacon (although there were hundreds of pounds of bacon consumed at the event).  The Porcupine Freedom Festival is a weeklong event organized by the Free State Project.  PorcFest 2012 was packed with liberty lessons, speakers, and consenting capitalist acts.

Nights at PorcFest 2012 – Photo by Nikki Darling

I see no reason to go into detail about the schedule of PorcFest; you may read about the events here.  I will be focusing on one of my favorite aspects of the week, the alternative currencies!

PorcFest 2012 Alternative Currencies – Photo by Ross from Don’t Tread on Meme

I just happened to be camping right next to the activists of Freedom’s Phoenix and Don’t Tread on Meme, which means I was next to the Moneylith!  The Moneylith is a vending machine filled with alternative currencies.  You give the machine your Federal Reserve Notes (FRN) and decide whether you want silver, gold, or Bitcoins.  Naturally, one of my first stops at PorcFest 2012 was to purchase my favorite Silver Dime Card as a souvenir (yes, that’s right, I wanted to hoard at least one).  Armed with my “Enemy of the State” card, I was ready to enjoy the PorcFest economy.

Some of my Favorite Silver Dime Cards – Rothbard and Firefly – from Don’t Tread on Meme

I have stated in the past that I am like a child when it comes to making purchases with alternative currencies.  I don’t care what I’m buying; it makes me happy to use gold, silver, copper, and even Bitcoins to do so.  I feel like there is an inherent lack of coercion in the transaction and it’s a feeling one does not often get to enjoy in the “United States”.

I exchanged coffee for silver, copper, and Bitcoins.  The coffee that I exchanged was not from the “United States” and had not been examined by the FDA.  No government representatives had declared my coffee maker and teapots “sanitary”.  Amazingly, no one died from consuming a beverage that had not been deemed “safe for consumption” and “sanitary” by the government.  This may have been a fluke.

During my time at PorcFest 2012, I exchanged silver for chicken fingers (which I highly doubt were the actual fingers of chickens), burgers, hot dogs (which I don’t think contained actual dog), gyro, French fries and French toast (which may not have originated in France), and even orange juice.  Oh, and of course, there was bacon.  Not once did I get sick, although I did get one heck of a hangover…  Again, this may have been a fluke.  It is doubtful one person could consume that much food over a prolonged period of time that had not been checked by the government and remain healthy.

I had two favorite exchanges at PorcFest 2012.  The first was a Bitcoin exchange.  It was truly a first for me.  I had already had one Bitcoin transfer to my website, but now it was raining and laptops were difficult to move.  I was ready to do something I never expected.  I gave a stranger my phone number.  About a minute later, I had a text message.  I was sent Bitcoins through a text message!

The text message, to be more exact, was a link.  I clicked the link and was sent to a temporary Bitcoin wallet, through Coinapult.com, which I could use to send the funds to my own wallet.  Apparently, Coinapult also lets you send coins with just an email address as well.  Bitcoins through a text message, my mind is still wrapping around the possibilities!  I also now have in my possession a physical Bitcoin (but that’s a tale for another day)!

Another exchange was with a friend of mine who also listens to my show.  He asked for a coffee and stated that he wanted to make an exchange entirely with alternative currencies.  He gave us a Silver Circle Movie round and was given a coffee and some copper rounds.  The look on his face reminded me of how great it is to engage in voluntary interactions.

Exchanges made with Federal Reserve Notes are inherently coercive.  The Federal Reserve prints it out and deflates the value of the currency currently held by others.  This very act should be considered theft.

To engage in voluntary interactions that are consenting, well, that’s a big part of why this piece was so difficult to write.  I have to accept that I am no longer at PorcFest.  It’s back to the state, the FRN’s, and the life I knew before.  I have come to realize though, that while I am deep in government interference, in my mind I can head back to PorcFest.  PorcFest is a Free State of mind…

Karen AKA Girl Writes What to be on Radio Freedom tonight!

Published May 2, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

Tonight on the Angel Clark Show on Radio Freedom we have Karen AKA Girl Writes What!

“I’m a divorced mother of three who’s tired of living in a society that treats men like assholes and women like children. I have a blog,owningyourshit.blogspot.com, and also write at avoiceformen.com, where I try to convince anyone who’ll listen to start thinking of men as human beings, and start insisting women collectively grow up”.

I stumbled across the phenomenon of the gender divide while talking to Ben Vonderheide of Daddy Justice and it was suggested I look up “GirlWritesWhat”.  So tonight’s show should be interesting!

Personally, I have been told that I was not doing enough to fight for feminists.  My own response was that I was fighting for individual liberties, and that the gender of the person should not matter.

Karen has spent a lot of time observing the gender biased from the opposite view, the fight against men.

I may be alarmed by the information she has for me.

Liberty Artist Tatiana Moroz to be on Radio Freedom

Published April 9, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

Monday, on the Angel Clark Show on Radio Freedom we have Tatiana Moroz!

Her bio is written in diary form:

Dear Diary,

My name is Tatiana, and I’m a singer-songwriter. When it’s late, and I realize that there is truly nothing or no one around to save me but myself, I pick up my guitar.  I pour everything into the music, and as cliche as that sounds, it really does make everything all better.  Music is my best friend.

I grew up in North Jersey (first Clifton then Wayne) and I started singing when I was 10.  I always knew I wanted to perform.

I loved words, and grew up listening to Phantom of the Opera, Cat Stevens, Carly Simon, Bob Dylan, and Madonna. Even though I wasn’t the coolest kid on the block, when I went to Poland (which I did every summer since I was 5), I was a rock star. One time, I was at camp, people literally crowded around the cabin chanting, “We want the American girl! We want the American girl!” Yes, I had my own friggin band o’ groupies.

Back in NJ, my social life blossomed. I kept performing in the school choir and musicals, and I took guitar lessons. I listened to Nirvana, Bob Dylan, Guns and Roses, Fiona Apple, Jewel, Alanis Morissette, the Indigo Girls, Beatles, Doors, and Janis. I rocked out at Phish, NIN and Pink Floyd concerts.

At Berklee College of Music, I studied jazz vocals and music business. After I graduated, I returned to NYC, where I immediately began working in some of the top recording studios, using my music business background. Really, I just wanted a place to figure out where I was headed, and a studio was still a more creative place than a label job.

That’s where I fell in love twice, with mixed results.  The bad romance left me heartbroken, but with the record as my motivator, my escape from the sadness, I completely finished my first album. It is my sparkling indie debut of 12 songs, “Tatiana” written, sung, and produced by yours truly.

Nowadays, I find myself with an even stronger conviction that music is the right path.  I am an active member of the Liberty movement, and have had wonderful opportunities to perform and meet inspiring people from all different backgrounds.  I see a light of hope for us all, and I feel closer to my fellow man than ever.  I find myself able to do something I have always dreamed: mix my love of humanity, my desire to make the world a better place, and my music into one.

I’ve said this before, but music is the one sure way I can turn anything horrible into something of beauty. The control I have over at least that one thing gives me peace and a sense of purpose. I love knowing that others can share in this – it’s a brief but true solution to loneliness, heartache, and all that.  It can also be a great motivator, and bring about great change.  Now after a few sad years, I finally can write some happy and hopeful songs…life is a roller coaster I guess and I am so grateful to be on it!

Whatever people think of me (and I know the Liberty movement for some strange reason can be a source of division- something I plan to fix!), I am very happy with where I am in life.  I feel good knowing that I am working toward something positive, and getting to use music as a vehicle for that is an added bonus.  I know that with my ’67 Gibson acoustic guitar and my hopeful heart, the world of possibilities is wide open

Write more soon!
Peace, Love, and Liberty,
Tatiana

Ron Paul shatters previous record with 8,500 voters attending his town hall in California (w pics)

Published April 6, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

2012 Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul attracted a peculiar 8,500-plus voters to the third of three town hall meetings he held in California this week, this time at UC-Berkeley.  In drawing such a huge crowd to Berkeley, the 12-term Congressman from Texas shattered his unrivaled town hall meeting attendance record.
At similar events held yesterday and Tuesday, respectively, Dr. Paul drew remarkable crowds of 6,200-plus voters to Cal State – Chicoand 6,000-plus at UCLA.

Ron Paul’s college campus town hall meeting took place at 7:00 p.m. PST at UC-Berkeley’s Memorial Glade, where he addressed the crowd from atop the steps of Doe Library, Berkeley, CA 94720.

The Giavelli Report asks why the media is afraid to show the thousands of Ron Paul supporters. I say it’s because then they have to admit that all those online polls that were thrown out because Ron Paul got too many voted were valid.  Then they would have to admit they’ve been manipulating the election. They may even have to admit to fraud.

Christine Smith to be on Radio Freedom tonight!

Published April 3, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

Tonight on the Angel Clark Show on Radio Freedom we have Christine Smith!

Christine Smith, 45, from Colorado, is a freelance writer, author, and speaker.

Her articles have appeared nationally and internationally covering a wide range of topics, including the arts, technology, business, politics, health, the environment, and human spirituality. She has also written profile interviews with high achievers including Gore Vidal, and a tourist guide for Europeans visiting Colorado. She additionally was commissioned to interview artists throughout Colorado for national magazine articles and was retained to contribute ten stories to a book based on interviews with entrepreneurs nationwide who had made major mid-life career changes. Christine is also author of an internationally popular book published in 2001, A Mountain In The Wind – An Exploration of the Spirituality of John Denver.

(You may read her articles regarding freedom/libertarianism which were published in the Future of Freedom Foundation’s journal HERE.)

She was the founder, manager and hostess for an annual musical event for six years which brought visitors to southern Colorado from worldwide, and was founder and president of a charity that helped thousands in need across America for over seven years. Christine was recipient of the Amigas Peace Power Prize in 2000 for her humanitarian work.  She has donated her public speaking and writing skills for years to help raise public awareness and support for other charitable/educational/environmental causes.

She was advertising sales director for a national physical fitness magazine for three years, and obtained national corporate sponsors to promote an event held at the Olympic Committee and Training Center.

Christine has appeared as a guest on numerous national and international radio shows regarding her views, writings, and work.

Politics

Christine is is a little “l” libertarian, referring to one who cherishes freedom, believes in personal responsibility, the non-initiation of force, free markets, and private property.  She rejects the control of economic and social affairs by the state, and believes people should be able to live their lives as they choose, as long as they do not harm others.

After many years involved in electoral politics, she has now rejected the electoral process entirely and is an anarchist (freedom based). Her previous political activities are detailed below, although she now rejects the electoral process as she views it as inconsistent with her focus on freedom and thus her belief in the non-aggression principle. She is now, of course, unaffiliated with any political party. She is an adherent of the Austrian School of Economics.  She credits The Law by Frederic Bastiat with eliminating all political confusion, as it clarified the immoral and unethical basis for all forms of governmental coercive intervention.

Christine attended Cato University’s “Economic Crisis, War, and the Rise of the State” program in San Diego, California in July 2009, and the Future of Freedom Foundation’s “Restoring the Republic 2008: Foreign Policy and Civil Liberties” conference in Reston, Virginia in June 2008.

Brief Political Bio:
Politically involved since her early teens (in 1980, at the age of thirteen she campaigned for Ronald Reagan, distributing literature door-to-door and organizing a political rally in his support), she has actively campaigned for local, state and federal candidates, as well as being involved in a variety of political issues. As a young adult through her mid-twenties, she was a Republican thinking the party actually cared about fiscal conservatism, respecting people’s financial freedom, and protecting the nation. Then for a number of years she registered as a Democrat, wrongly thinking they cared about the poor and others. In her late 30′s, she realized there was very little difference at all between those parties since they were like one big political party — the party of big government, violating individual rights repeatedly.

Becoming a registered member of the Libertarian Party, she was a candidate for the Libertarian Party (LP) presidential nomination in 2008. During her campaign, Christine was gratified to receive support from many libertarians nationwide (including receiving a landslide victory over the other LP candidates in the California primary on Super Tuesday), and appreciated the opportunity to speak at LP conventions in eight states. [Winning the CA LP primary with 25.2% of votes cast for LP candidates, no other Libertarian candidate came close to the thousands of votes cast for Smith. There were 11 other Libertarian candidates listed on the California primary ballot. Smith's 25.2% majority was followed by Kubby (17%), Root (13.9%), Jackson (8.8%) ,Phillies (5.1%) (Information from CA Secretary of State). The remaining 30% of registered Libertarian votes were divided between other candidates/write-ins.)] She was also a candidate (Libertarian) for the State House (District 60) in Colorado’s 2010 election.
