Kevin R. C. Gutzman is the New York Times best-selling author of four books.  Professor of History at Western Connecticut State University, Gutzman holds a bachelor’s degree, a master of public affairs degree, and a law degree from the University of Texas at Austin, as well as an MA and a PhD in American history from the University of Virginia.  Happy to be a former attorney, Gutzman devotes his intellectual energy to teaching courses in the Revolutionary and constitutional history of the United States, to writing books and articles in these fields, and to public speaking on related topics.

Dr. Gutzman’s first book was the New York Times best-seller The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution, an account of American constitutional history from the pre-Revolutionary days to the present. This work is unique in joining the fruits of the latest scholarship, a very readable presentation, and a distinctly Jeffersonian point of view. His second book, Virginia’s American Revolution: From Dominion to Republic, 1776-1840, explores the issue what the Revolutionaries made of the Revolution in Thomas Jefferson’s home state. After that, he co-authored Who Killed the Constitution? The Federal Government vs. American Liberty from World War I to Barack Obama with New York Times best-selling author Thomas E. Woods, Jr. Gutzman’s new book is James Madison and the Making of America, and he is already at work on At Swords’ Point: Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, and the Rivalry that Shaped America (New York: St. Martin’s Press, 2014 (forthcoming)).

Gutzman has edited new editions of John Taylor of Caroline’s Tyranny Unmasked and New Views of the Constitution of the United States. His essay “Lincoln as Jeffersonian: The Colonization Chimera” appeared in editor Brian Dirck’s collection Lincoln Emancipated: The President and the Politics of Race, and his “Ratification (including the Virginia Ratification Convention and the First Federal Elections)” will appear in editor Stuart Leibiger’s A Companion to James Madison and James Monroe (Blackwell 2012 (forthcoming)).

Gutzman has appeared on well over 200 radio programs, including syndicated shows such as The Michael Medved Show, the Janet Parshall Show, the Curtis Sliwa Show, and multiple programs on Air America, on Sirius Satellite Radio’s Mike Church Show (including as guest host), on America’s Radio News Network, as well as on C-SPAN 2′s “BookTV,” CNN’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” and Fox News’s “The Glenn Beck Program.” He has also been interviewed by reporters from the AP, the Washington Times, the Philadelphia Enquirer, the Washington Post, The Hartford Business Journal, the Houston Chronicle online, and the New York Times.

Is Facebook marking pro-Ron Paul sites as spam?

Published February 8, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

I’m a talk radio host trying to build my career so I do what I can to build up my social networking (including airing my show live on RonPaulRadio.net and the Liberty Radio Network Monday through Friday from 5-7 pm EST). One of my websites is my personal blog that I have been publishing on for over 3 years.

I try to post regularly, but sometimes I slack. Most of my posts are political and Ron Paul related.

For the last 3 days I haven’t been able to share my blog on Facebook.

I can click the share button embedded on individual posts, but I can’t take any links to my blog and place it in the Facebook update box and share. Facebook tells me that my blog has spam images and each image that they call spam isn’t even on my site.

Some sites are too big for them to block, but some smaller ones maybe they’re marking as spam. Is it just me? Do you have a small website that is pro Ron Paul that isn’t being shared as well?

Making Lemonade out of Lemons! What happens AFTER you get fired through Facebook…

Published January 6, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

I have decided to make the best out of the situation I now find myself in. It can be quite scary to suddenly lose your income, especially with the current high unemployment rates.

I have recently found myself without my usual income so I now have to sell more ads for my podcast. I don’t need to make a lot, so every little bit helps. My podcast is growing in popularity and is aired on numerous stations throughout the country.

Most terrestrial stations charge thousands a month for advertising. But thanks to technology people are listening to podcasts! Smartphones and computers allow listeners to listen when they want, not just when you’re live!

I don’t need that much, so I can put out a call for my readers and listeners. Do you know anyone who may have any interest in affordable advertising which reaches a liberty-minded audience?

We have advertising packages starting at as little as $100 a month! Live reads can be done for as little as $25! If you don’t have a business, but you want to promote a politician or company that you like, we can do that too! (but I draw the line at Newt Gingrich ads, a girl has to have her standards!)

A package with advertising on either of my websites is also available!

So, can we get the word out? Also, since Facebook has been turned into a way to lose money for me, I’d like to turn it into a way to make money! In other words, share this on Facebook!

If you’re interested in an ad, give me a call! My studio number is 302-569-9992!

I just got fired THROUGH Facebook

Published January 4, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

Yes, you read that correctly, I just got fired through Facebook. Not because of something I said on Facebook (as has happened) but through a Facebook message.

I can understand wanting to “take your programming in a different direction”, but is there a reason why employees no longer deserve a even a phone call when you cut off their income with no warning?

Talk radio is a competitive field (as I have also learned through Facebook)…

but I would expect some kind of professional behavior when actually terminating someone’s employment as opposed to simply changing their schedule around.

Why am I publishing this? I’m upset, believe that, and I may regret hitting the “Publish” button after I do, but I want every business owner out there to know that firing someone THROUGH A SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE is extremely insulting.

I have worked for WGMD for almost a year without missing a single scheduled day. I was electrocuted on the air when the station was struck by lightening, I completed a 5 hour show with no phone lines and ringing ears because I couldn’t reach anyone higher up on the “totem poll” to tell me what to do. My boss answered one text message, but then ignored his cell phone. I worked Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and New Years Day. I’m not whining, I just think I should have AT LEAST gotten a phone call.

So, to sum up, as far as I know, I did nothing wrong. I responded to my former program director on Facebook and asked why my termination did not deserve a phone call, no response as of yet (although that was just 30 minutes ago). My online show will continue (there will most likely be a time change coming up on February 1st, 2012 for syndication purposes) and I obviously have to sell more ads for it as my supplemental income has just vanished (of course, ads are available, contact me for rates).  And for me, Facebook is no longer about social networking and playing games, it’s also a place that I can get fired through.

Understand, I am upset over being fired, but that is not why I am being so vocal about this. Programming can be tricky and of course, everyone has the right to pick and choose who they like for their station. My problem is the manner in which this news was given to me.

If you’re a business owner, please do not fire your employees through Facebook. It belittles them. You need to take at least 10 minutes out of your day and at least give them a phone call (if you don’t have the guts to tell them to their face). I now feel like less of a person because I don’t even deserve a phone call. No one else should have to feel like that.

UPDATE – 1/6/2012 – I’ve been getting a lot of questions, people who think that I must have been a broadcaster who bought their air time (some people do that, they buy their air time and then sell ads to pay for that time) or my show was syndicated and aired on more than just this one station. I was not that kind of employee. I called the income supplemental because I was part time, but that was my only job. I went to that station every weekend and broadcasted directly from their audio booth. I would like to profit enough from selling ads from my podcast (which I started after the last Facebook communication from my boss in August [at least he had the decency to apologize for the way he gave that news) but I haven’t made enough money from that yet to pay the bills.

My previous employee responded and told me he was being efficient… I guess he was out of the office when he sent the message so didn’t have my phone number in his cell phone?

Isn’t it nice to get fired efficiently?

Let’s play a Christmas game with the TSA!

Published December 22, 2011 by Sussex County Angel

I have a genius idea! I mean, I have found a way to spread the Christmas spirit to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)!

If you are doing any traveling this holiday season, give the TSA the gift that keeps on giving!

In other words, if you can, wrap up your clothing as gifts. Take each shirt, pair of pants, skirt, dress, even shoes, and place them in a gift box (don’t forget the tissue paper)! Then wrap each gift box with pretty paper.

Place the wrapped packages (or as many as you can) in your carry-on luggage.

The TSA agents will get to open each gift before you get on the plane!

Smoking ban may soon spread to houses in Florida

Published October 30, 2011 by Sussex County Angel

“We want our homes and our children to be safe and free of tobacco,” said Ellen Feiler, health promotion director for the Broward County Health Department. “We don’t want it coming through the walls. We don’t want people walking down the street and breathing in someone else’s smoke.”

Are you ever amazed by some of the things that you read? I have to admit that it happens to me on a regular basis. Maybe it’s because I read more news than I used to or maybe it’s because people have gotten to the point where they want to legislate away things they consider to be immoral or unsafe with a complete disregard to human rights.

What is the concept here? Public housing, private apartments, and condominiums should be smoke-free so that your neighbors don’t have to endure smoke seeping through their walls or windows.

In Miami-Dade County, health officials are working with some residents of Winston Towers condominiums in Sunny Isles Beach who would like clear the air in their buildings. It’s not an easy challenge, especially since residents own their own units.

Yes, the residents own their own units. One neighbor says the following:

But Koenig said her home shouldn’t be subjected to smoke from others, whether its coming from outdoor terraces or through bathroom vents.

“We had to close the bathroom door, the smell was so intense,” she said. “It was like a toxic waste dump. You don’t want to breathe this stuff into you.”

Yes, you have every right not to smoke in your home, but you have no right to tell someone else they cannot smoke in theirs. Or even on their outdoor terrace. Next will you tell people that if they have visitors in your smoke-free environment that their visitors cannot smoke in the parking lot?

One private sector company has the right idea. Instead of telling people they cannot smoke in their own homes, they will build two sets of condominiums. One that is smoke-free and one that is not. If people purchase enough of the smoke-free condominiums they will build more.

At Archstone Delray Beach, three-quarters of residents surveyed said they were interested in smoke-free housing, said Dionne Van Druff, Archstone’s operations manager for Florida. She said the company expects to start with one building where all current residents prefer smoke-free accommodations. It would then expand to more buildings based on demand.

“Once we start rolling those out, we’re assuming it will generate more interest as people get wind of it,” Van Druff said. She said the company would then look to offer smoke-free housing in Archstone complexes inPembroke Pines, Royal Palm Beach and west Boynton Beach.

What happens if you live in an apartment complex, public housing complex, or condominium where they decide they are going to go smoke-free?

The current campaign does consider the desire of smokers. Health officials come in and educate interested residents about the risks of secondhand smoke and the benefits of smoke-free housing. Besides lowering health risks, smoke-free housing reduces the chance of fires, can decrease insurance premiums and can lower building maintenance costs.

Officials also survey building occupants to gauge support for a smoke-free environment. Then it’s up to housing authorities, condo directors or apartment managers to decide whether to provide a smoke-free building.

Health officials educate residents about the risks… as I am sure that residents cannot read the surgeon generals warning that is already on every pack of cigarettes they purchase.  What they most likely mean by this is they pressure the residents to give up smoking for the greater good or find a new home.

Either make nicotine illegal or stop treating smokers like second-class citizens…
