7-year-old boy, Josh Welch, suspended for shaping his food into a gun

Published March 1, 2013 by Sussex County Angel

Josh Welch is a seven-year-old-boy who attends Park Elementary School in Brooklyn Park. The Maryland school has a breakfast “snack time” and provided pastries on Friday. Josh was trying to turn his pastry into a shape. Josh chewed his breakfast pastry into the shape of a gun and was suspended for two days.

Josh had his parents called into the school after the teacher took away his half-eaten breakfast pastry. Josh told Fox Baltimore he was trying to shape the pastry into a mountain, but it looked more like a gun. Regardless of the shape the child was trying to make, the pastry was still simply food and could not actually harm anyone.

Amazon wants to give me $2 to change my profile and follow people with my Twitter account

Published July 23, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

So I saw this fun promotion! I connect my Amazon account with my Twitter account and I get $2 in free credits to buy MP3s.  I love free stuff, Amazon, and music, so this seemed like a no-brainer!

Also, I can see the merit in having my Twitter account linked to my Amazon:

“Angel just added Item of Awesomeness to her wishlist!” – Then people could buy it for me! My online wishlist would actually have a point!

I clicked the button to add my Twitter account to my Amazon and read the permissions Amazon wants…

I’m sorry Amazon, but who are you planning on following and why the hell do you want to update my profile?  Is it not enough that you would have access to all the people who follow me (and my Facebook page since that’s linked to my Twitter) but you have to follow people AND update my profile???

You’re planning on changing my profile picture to this chick and making me follow Nair aren’t you…

Nice try Amazon, but not good enough…

This proposal brought out the romantic in me

Published May 30, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

OK, so I’m not really a romantic kind of girl.  I play video games and like to watch blow-em-up movies.  I hate those crappy love songs where some guy swears he’ll die for a woman instead of promising that he’ll fight like Jason Statham to make sure no one can get close enough to be in a position to viably threaten her.

In other words, the Bruno Mars song, “I’ll catch a grenade for you”, drives me insane.

This other Bruno Mars song, however, just made me smile.

Business Insider:

Men around the country will either loathe or be inspired by Isaac Lamb—because he just set the bar for creative marriage proposals pretty high.

Last Wednesday, Lamb gathered more than 60 friends and family to organize a surprise lip-dub proposal of Bruno Mars’ “Marry Me” to his girlfriend, Amy Frankel.

The video subsequently went viral on YouTube, being watched more than 5 million times.

This may just top the viral video of Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz‘ wedding party dancing to Chris Brown’s “Forever.”

Why Facebook lost value and not just because they’re changing ‘Timeline’ again

Published May 23, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

The positive buzz around Facebook’s I.P.O. starting public trading dissipated on Tuesday as Facebook stocks dropped to $31.00.  Despite its massive user base, it seems that Facebook will now have to face the reality that their value is not as high as the company wishes.  A stock selloff almost turned into a run on Monday.  Tuesday was a day ofnumerous announcements that may have affected Facebook’s rapidly dropping stock value as well as many sitesanalyzing why Facebook’s stock has dropped.

Reuters reported that the social network had settled a lawsuit in San Jose, Calif. over the “sponsored stories” feature.  Facebook had publicized users’ likes and preferences without allowing the option to opt out or be compensated.  Facebook now offers users the chance to opt out of sharing their likes and preferences with a few clicks of their mouse.  The terms of the settlement are not complete in the court documents.

Nasdaq announced that there had been some “technical glitches” regarding the Facebook stock.  Investors lost money as the technical glitch stopped many from selling their shares.  The delay in selling shares may have helped contain the stock’s rapidly dropping price.  Morgan Stanley, the lead banker on the I.P.O., stepped in at least once to help stabilize the price.

CNET.com looked at Facebook’s profit margins and estimated that despite the huge number of users Facebook has, it is just not worth $100 billion.

So how did the most heavily hyped stock completely fall on its face? There are a lot of reasons: glitches with the Nasdaq system that slowed early orders, an IPO price that got a last-minute bump, and indications of lackluster demand from institutional investors. But the most important is the underlying concern and growing realization that Facebook just isn’t worth $100 billion.

Another announcement that may have affected Facebook’s value would be the announcement on Tuesday that Facebook is again editing their layout.  Facebook has confirmed they are quietly testing a new look for their “Timeline” profiles.  Every time that Facebook changes the layout of their site, there are complaints from all over the internet.  In the future, this may affect the stock value.

Maybe the company, now that it is worried about profits, will remember the reaction of the user the next time they change the layouts so drastically.

How to stop Facebook from using your pictures in their advertising

Published May 22, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

Facebook stocks dropped over 10% on Monday, the first day after the stock went public.  The social network has had its fair share of negativity in the press in the last few days, including one mother who dedicated a page to her son and had it taken away.  General Motors announced thattheir Facebook ads did not work and Greenlight reported that 44% of Facebook users never click on the sponsored ads on the side of the page.

The Facebook IPO started at $38 and many speculate the actual value Facebook is in the $16-24 range.  Facebook has made a few changed recently which you may not be aware of, changes which may help increase the value of their stock.

Have you paid attention to the third party ads and social ads on Facebook?  Did you know that when you upload an image to your Facebook page, you are giving Facebook access to that image?

What are third party ads
Third party ads are ads shown by companies and people on Facebook. These might be tailored to small medium or large businesses. FB once ran into trouble with these ads as they were using users photos in the ads. That according to Facebook will not happen again but if in case this does happen in the future you need to protect yourself against it.

What are social ads
Social ads track the likes of your friends. So if one of your friends likes an ad on Facebook. You will see their name below the ad with the caption (name of friend who likes this). Social ads on Facebook pair your likes beside ads to show to your friends.

A 4/20 ode to medical marijuana

Published April 20, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

I was born and raised in Delaware, but I almost died in Maryland. Medical marijuana could have drastically changed my life.

I tend to keep my personal life just that – personal – and for good reason. Governor Markell of Delaware has forced my hand in revealing something I would normally hold close.

I was diagnosed with a degenerative nerve disorder in 2007. Doctors told me that my life would drastically change, as well as be shortened. I never realized that the shortened life expectancy was due to the medication prescribed to me by physicians as well as the nerve disorder.

My primary care physician, an amazingly sweet man, looked at me with pity as he sent me to a pain management clinic (another reason I kept this information private in the past is that I hate to be pitied). My pain management doctor started me out on the usual treatment, a high dose of narcotics.

You see, with nerve damage, it’s difficult to actually manage the pain. In most cases, the doctors simply try to keep the patient drugged up. As it happens, Percocet and OxyContin are legal drugs while marijuana is immoral.

Natural News editor Mike Adams calls for armed citizens’ arrests in Michigan

Published April 17, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

Natural News is reporting that in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has conducted armed raids on pig farmers.  In two instances, the DNR organized raids including six vehicles and ten armed men.  The Michigan Department of Natural Resources intended to shoot all of the farmers’ pigs.  The actions of the DNR are based on a new order, the “Invasive Species Order“, which declares livestock to be an invasive species.  The Invasive Species Order (ISO) deems farmers who raise invasive species, such as these pigs, to be felons.

Joseph O’Leary, an attorney representing one of the targeted farmers, questions the constitutionality of this behavior.

“I think this is an unconstitutional order, these actions of the DNR are way out of bounds,” O’Leary told NaturalNews ”To take what was six months ago an entirely legal activity, and suddenly people are felons over it.  They’re not growing drugs, running guns or killing anybody, they’re raising animals pursuant to USDA regulations and state of Michigan regulations.  They haven’t done anything wrong here, and the DNR is treating them like they are hardened criminals.”

One farmer who knew the DNR would be coming was forced to shoot his own pigs, one by one, including baby piglets.  The farmer wanted to avoid being arrested as a felon, and so he destroyed his livelihood with his own hands instead of waiting for the government to do it for him.  The DNR then obtained a search warrant (possibly illegally by lying to a judge) and raided his farm anyway to ensure no pigs had survived.

Some guy was creeping with my cell phone number

Published April 7, 2012 by Sussex County Angel

I tend to change my cell phone number regularly.  Politicians get a hold of it and they ask for favors.  They call, text, and annoy.  I haven’t done so in awhile though.

I had my old cell number for over a year.  When I first got the phone I got some random text messages asking for “Jesse”.  When I responded they had the wrong number, some people were incredulous.  ”You’re lying” was one response.

This morning I got a phone call at 7:30 am.

Me – super groggy and figuring someone had better be dead for me to be getting a call so early: “Hello”

Wide awake female voice: “Who is this?”

Me: “huh”

Wide awake female voice: “Who is this?”

Me: “It’s Angel”

Wide awake female voice: “Why are you answering Jesse’s phone?”

Me: “You have the wrong number”

Wide awake female voice: “He just gave it to me”

Me: “You must be a moped”

I hung up and promptly changed my phone number.

This guy Jesse was picking up chicks and when he left, giving them the wrong number.

As messed up as that is for the females who get played, guys, please remember that someone actually has that number you’re giving out.  The last thing I was to do at 7:30 am on a Saturday morning is explain to your one night stand that she just got played…

Anyway, Happy Easter
