OK, maybe Climate Change will not disappear when Ron Sams is out of his leadership position in the Sussex County GOP, but what WILL happen? Before we focus on the possibilities of growth without Ron Sams holding the gavel, let us compare some past and present issues.
Does everyone remember “The Walrus and the Carpenter”? This story by Lewis Carroll involves a walrus and a carpenter walking down the beach and talking many oysters into walking with them. After about a mile (and some interesting chats), the walrus and the carpenter shuck and devour the oysters.
“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
“To talk of many things:
Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
Of cabbages–and kings–
And why the sea is boiling hot–
And whether pigs have wings.”
Why do I bring this up? The walrus, with his endearing mustache and friendly smile, reminds me of someone. All the while he is walking and talking with you, engaging you in interesting conversation and seeming to be on your side, he is also planning to destroy all your hopes for growth in the future.
Is it realistic to say Ron Sams is the source of the Sussex GOP’s problems? No. The sources of the problems are much deeper than any one man. It is realistic to say, however, that Ron Sams is personally standing in the way of many of the changes the Sussex GOP needs to make to grow. I have seen Ron Sams and his gavel ignore open motions on the floor. I have seen Ron Sams and his gavel ignore “New Business” in order to stop people from making changes to the system that HE helps to run.
As of February 3rd, “34 GOP Executive Committee members” had signed a petition asking Ron Sams to resign. At the next GOP meeting (on February 16th) Ron Sams and the Vice Bryan Shupe will apparently not be present. All interested parties may wish to attend to see what happens. The word on the Internet is that there will be a motion for Ron Sams to be voted out whether he is there or not.
What changes are possible without Ron Sams having control of the gavel? Maybe we can find out more about pigs having wings for a starter…
